2 tips for child custody during the summer break

On Behalf of | Feb 17, 2025 | Child Custody |

Going through a divorce when you have children means that you and your ex will each have to plan how to care for the children during your own parenting time. One part of the year that’s particularly challenging is summer, partly because school isn’t in session.

Because of the complexities of the summer, it’s always best to make plans for your time with the children well in advance. Remembering these two tips may make the process a little less stressful.

1. Decide how childcare will be handled

If you and your ex get along and live in the same area, you may be able to work together to make childcare plans for the children. This could ensure continuity of care throughout the entire summer. Ensure you have clear guidelines about who will pay for what portions of the childcare so there aren’t any issues.

2. Plan ahead for vacations

Vacations are often an important part of summer, so making plans for those early is beneficial. Be sure to review the parenting plan to determine the parenting time schedule so you can decide when to plan a vacation. Some parenting plans include terms that allow a vacation to trump the normal parenting time schedule, so that may be a factor in your planning.

The terms that are set in the parenting plan are the basis for everything related to the children. Because of this, the terms must be set clearly and based on what’s best for the kids. Working with someone familiar with these matters is critical to better ensure everything is handled properly.
