Adopting a child is a huge responsibility and applicants are required to meet specific state guidelines. The state is responsible for the care and safety of every child in the foster system, so if you wish to adopt, it must ensure you are physically, mentally and financially able to care for a kid. The goal is to ensure you can provide a safe and happy home for a child.
The Texas Department of Family and Protective Services has specific requirements you must meet to adopt a child from within the foster system.
Basic qualifications for adopting
You must show the state that you have the basic ability to parent a child, which includes being at least 21 years old. You need to show you are responsible and mature enough to parent a child. Your finances must also be in good shape to show you can provide for the child’s monetary needs.
There are no requirements for you to have a spouse, as single people can also get approval to adopt. The state does not inquire about any personal details, such as your sexual orientation or religious affiliation. You will need to talk with professionals about your background and lifestyle, however, including the reasons why you wish to adopt.
Providing the right documentation
You must provide the state with documentation to back up any claims you make about yourself. This includes an application for adoption and, if you’re married, proof of your marital status. You will also need to provide references from your relatives and from people not related to you who can vouch for your character and aptitude.
Completing background checks
You will have to undergo a criminal background check to make sure you are eligible to adopt. If there are other adults in your home, they must also submit to a background check since the child will be in their presence as well.
Additionally, a representative will visit you to perform a home study to see where the child will live and to talk with you and your family. You also will have to attend a training course to learn about abused and neglected children.
