Reasons why gray divorce is on the rise

On Behalf of | Nov 22, 2019 | Divorce |

These days, ending a marriage is not something that is considered uncommon. It may come as a surprise to some, but the overall divorce rate in Texas and across the United States has been on the decline over the last few years. However, among one specific demographic, the rate of divorce has skyrocketed. In a phenomenon known as gray divorce, more and more couples over the age of 55 are calling it quits. Here are some reasons why.

Financial concerns are one of the main reasons for any divorce. For older couples, this is no different. After retirement, money is often tighter, causing added stress and disputes. Many times, financial problems are not easily solved, so older couples sometimes decide that divorce is the only solution.

As people and marriages age, they definitely change. Couples who divorce later in life often say that they have just grown apart over the years. As couples hit retirement age, they find they are spending more and more time together. Often, they find that their spouse is not the same person they married and venture outside the marriage to find a more compatible partner

As couples age, they find that they want different things. One spouse may want to travel while the other spouse wants a more relaxed lifestyle. They come to a mutual understanding that divorcing is the best course of action. Divorce is often thought of as a negative, but divorce can be a time of new beginnings, even for older adults. Those in Texas who have questions regarding divorce can find guidance by contacting an experienced and knowledgeable attorney.
