Texas family law: Online postings can impact divorce proceedings

On Behalf of | May 4, 2017 | Family Law |

During the dissolution of a marriage in Texas, the desire to move on emotionally can understandably be great. This is why dating even during divorce is not all that uncommon. However, keeping one’s dating life offline is paramount for helping to ensure the best outcome during this type of family law proceeding.

In some cases, those going through divorce try to paint more attractive pictures of themselves in their online dating profiles. This may mean leaving out that they have children, or indicating they earn much more than they really do. If their soon-to-be-exes get wind of these fudged profiles, the resulting anger may lead to requests for an increase in alimony and even a decrease in parenting time. In some cases, a demand may be made for an audit to search for any hidden assets.

What is put online may have implications during a divorce proceeding, as it could be utilized as evidence against the person doing the online postings. This may be true even if the divorce has already been finalized. For example, some online posts may cause an ex-spouse and co-parent to question the character of the individual doing the posting and spark further child custody disputes.

Going through all of the steps of a Texas divorce proceeding can be complicated and exhausting, mentally and physically. Fortunately, a family law attorney can offer guidance on what to do and what to avoid when it comes to online activity in these circumstances. Clearly, this advice can have a long-term impact on one’s finances and child custody arrangement.
