Two high-profile individuals recently decided to dissolve their marriage in another state. Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner are going through the divorce process a couple of years after announcing their separation. The divorce process can understandably be complicated in Texas and other states, but understanding the law can help those going through the process to attain the outcomes they desire.
In the case involving Affleck and Garner, these two celebrities filed their documents together. As part of this type of family law proceeding, both parties are seeking physical and joint legal child custody. They have three children together.
The date of the separation has not yet been determined. In addition, how the couple’s property is to be divided has not been decided. No information about whether spousal support will have to be paid is available at the moment, either.
Divorce can be a stressful process in Texas both emotionally and financially, especially for those with high-value assets or those who are in the public spotlight due to their professions. However, if two divorcing spouses are able to find common ground, they may be able to negotiate matters such as asset division, thus avoiding further court intrusion and being able to keep their affairs private. Negotiation can be especially helpful in divorce proceedings involving children, as they are generally less stressful for the entire family. However, if no settlement can be reached at the negotiating table, a judge will have to step in to make important decisions for the couple at trial, which one or both of the parties may not consider to be in their personal best interests.
